The function of bicycle helmets in protecting cyclists' lives is unquestionable. According to a report by the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI), in the United States, 98% of cyclists who died in accidents in 1999 were not wearing helmets. Wearing a helmet in collisions reduces the risk of severe head injury by 85%. As the number of hard asphalt and stone roads increases, the number of head injuries from cycling accidents is also rising. Bicycle helmets are essential equipment for cyclists because they provide protection for the vulnerable head.
People who have never been in an accident may not appreciate the importance of good equipment. Many people have an inferiority complex and think that others who wear good equipment are just showing off. However, that's not the case. When falling off a bike at the same speed, we naturally hope for the strongest protection possible. Life is precious, and saving money on equipment means spending more in the hospital. Even the most minor fracture surgery can cost nearly ten thousand yuan. Saving money in this area is truly not worth it. Let's look at the seven characteristics that distinguish good helmets from poor ones.
[Material] Good Density
Helmets are generally made of foam materials (regular or high-density, differing in their collision resistance) and have smooth outer shells.
[Weight] Lightweight
Anything placed on the head should not be too heavy, which is why bicycle helmets do not use alloy materials. Most helmets weigh between 9-16 ounces, which is just in pounds or even lighter! Note: Cheap helmets are mostly heavy.
[Lining] Washable
Helmets with washable corduroy fabric or antimicrobial padding can keep your helmet clean and comfortable to wear. Well-made helmets have larger, better-quality linings that adhere more securely to the inside of the helmet. The Velcro at the back of the lining facilitates cleaning. Just soak it in water with detergent or dishwashing liquid for a few minutes, gently rub it with your hands, rinse it with clean water, and let it dry.
[Comfort] Adjustable Head Circumference
Cheap helmets are generally uncomfortable. A well-fitting helmet is essential. Bicycle shop helmets come in small, medium, large, and extended sizes. Cheap helmets may only come in one size. A comfortable helmet can greatly reduce pressure on the cyclist's head and neck and maximize protection during impacts.
[Ventilation] Dry and Cool
It ensures your head stays dry during long rides. The more ventilation holes on the helmet, the greater the airflow around your head, and the cooler you will feel. Cheap helmets have fewer ventilation holes and can be hot. However, remember that more ventilation holes expose more of your head, reducing protection. In hot weather, wear a "sweatband" on your head to prevent sweat from getting into your eyes. In colder seasons, wear "earmuffs" or a stretchy thin scarf (called a balaclava) inside for warmth.
[Type] Meets Riding Needs
Half-shell cycling helmets are divided into road-specific (without a visor) and dual-purpose road and mountain bike (with a removable visor). Some people also use helmets similar to those used in baseball or inline skating. Full-face cycling helmets resemble motorcycle helmets and are generally used by downhill or trial bike enthusiasts. Therefore, the type you choose also determines the helmet's price to some extent.
[Design] User-friendly
Helmets come in various types. Some helmets have a plastic visor in front to protect glasses from sun exposure and rain. Helmets with visors can prevent sunburn, and adding reflective markings to the helmet can prevent collisions during night rides. The more visible the color at night, the easier it is for cars or other cyclists to see you. (PS: Don't assume that bright colors are just for showing off.)
Besides the above points that determine helmet prices, another factor is that besides material costs, there are also costs related to research and development intellectual property, marketing, brand premium, and other aspects. Cost-effectiveness cannot be generalized. At least in the helmet industry, the requirement for technical content is very high. Compared to luxury brands like LV, helmets are much more honest.
In summary, when choosing a bicycle helmet, you should prioritize your needs and select a reasonably priced helmet based on the importance of helmet selection criteria. However, note the following order of priority: comfort, ventilation, appearance, and weight.
How often should you replace your helmet?
The purpose of a helmet is to crack, which is what it should do. The material used in helmets is designed to crack suddenly when the head hits something. This is how helmets protect the head. Helmets are designed to withstand at least one impact! After any collision, replace the old helmet immediately to ensure its optimal performance.
Note: Regardless of whether you have fallen or collided, cyclists should replace their helmets every three years. Although the helmet has not been involved in a collision, exposure to sunlight and sweat can cause the helmet and some accessories to degrade, reducing safety factors and damaging protective performance.
No matter how expensive the cycling helmet is, it must be tight!
Some suggestions:
If the helmet has instructions, please read them carefully before wearing.
Avoid using chemical agents to clean the helmet. The manufacturer recommends using a soft cloth or sponge with some soapy water.
Do not store it in places prone to high temperatures, such as attics, garages, or trunks. Excessive heat can cause the foam plastic to bubble, and do not wear a helmet that has been damaged by overheating.
Do not lend your helmet to others. You must be aware of the condition of your helmet and ensure it is intact after each use.
